Virginia CPA CPE Requirements and Courses

Virginia CPA CPE requirementsTo maintain an active CPA license in Virginia, certified public accountants have to fulfill a CPE requirement on a triennial basis.

Here is a summary for your reference:

Virginia CPA CPE Requirements

In Virginia, CPAs need 120 hours of continuing education per every rolling 3-year reporting period, which spans from January 1 to December 31. Furthermore, CPE credits must be accumulated upon your renewal date, which is assigned by the board.

Specific Requirements

  • At least 20 hours per year
  • Credits for the previous year must be obtained by January 31
  • At least 2 hours of “Virginia-specific” ethics course per year (i.e. 6 hours per reporting period), relating to standards of conduct, Code of Virginia statutes relating to public accountancy, and the Board’s regulations
  • At least 8 hours in accounting and auditing if you release or authorize the release of reports
  • Can carry forward up to 30 CPE hours to the next reporting period
