Wiley CPA Review 2011 Update: What Is In
First of all, the book is written by Roger Philipp, the well-known, dynamic founder and instructor over at Roger CPA Review. I am on his email list and Roger has been doing a good job in keeping us up to date, so I am quite sure he is one of the best people to to present this update on behalf of Wiley Publishing.
So, what does this CPA Review 2011 Update cover?
1. New exam format. Topics discussed include the new duration for each section, how certain topics have been reshuffled and will appear in another section, and also the new split of multiple choice questions, simulations and written communications in each section.
2. New exam content. Roger goes through the new format of the exam, including new topics. There is more coverage on IFRS – International Financial Reporting Standards which is the most important changes, as well as a handful of other new topics such as International Ethics Standards for Accountants in AUD, Financial Statements of Trusts in REG and Economic Globalization in BEC.
Sample questions on each of these new topics are available. Each section contains 3-6 task-based simulations for you to work on.
3. Useful tips. Examples include the suggested time to allocate for each multiple choice question / simulation in each section.
Wiley CPA Review 2011 Update: What Is NOT In
1. This is an update, not a exam prep book. Please bear in mind that this book is written to update everyone on the format, and to a lesser extent, the content and exam questions of the new 2011 CPA exam change. In other words, it should not be seen as a CPA review book itself. (You can get the discounted Wiley CPA exam prep book here).
2. This is written based on the latest CSO instead of the real test. Since it is not yet 2011 at the time of writing, Roger is writing this book based on the CSO (i.e.Content Specification Outline) published by the AICPA.
In the real test, there is a chance that the examiners adjust the exam format and content here and there. But then, this is probably the best estimate available before the 2011 new exam rolls out.
General Layout Of The Book
I personally find the book too wordy to my reading style (which is quite surprising, given it is written by Roger Philipp) but at the same time, Wiley needs to justify the $24.95 (or $16.5$15.21 at Amazon) by giving you a 192-page book. Having said that, there are charts throughout the book that are quite helpful in conveying the message. So all in all I think it is well-written.
My Recommendations
|
If you are new to the CPA exam, I would suggest that you skip this book and go straight to the latest edition from the CPA exam review courses. However, if you have already passed some sections, this is going to be one convenient book that provides valuable update to get to psychologically prepared. |
By The Way, If You Like Roger…
Roger Philipp actually runs a CPA review course himself that provides both live classes (in-class and “satellite” classes) and self-study course. Here is my evaluation of his CPA review or you can go directly to Roger CPA Review here.

Hi Stephanie – I have taken all sections of the CPA exam and have passed REG so far. I have been within 5 points of passing on the other 3 sections. Do you think it would be feasible to study and pass the 2011 exam using the 2010 exam review books (I have Becker/Gleim) and the Wiley CPA Review 2011 Update for the 2011 exam changes? Or do you think it would be better to buy the 2011 exam review books? I plan on using the 2011 Wiley Test Bank CD regardless. Thanks!

Kia and Katherine,
Sorry to get back to you late — I’ve been overwhelmed at my day job. Anyway, if the retake is REG, I would say don’t worry about getting the 2011 version because the change in REG is small.
However, if you need to retake the other 3… I would think let’s get the new version (at least the Test Bank CD as you said) because both the format and content can be quite different. This is especially so for FAR.
