Maine CPA Exam Requirements

Maine CPA exam requirementsMaine has a relatively easy education prerequisite to sit for the exam — as long as you have a bachelor degree you are all set. Having said that, you do need to have 150 credit hours as well as certain accounting courses to get the license. Also, the Board has a strict experience requirement: 2 years of publicaccounting experience is required to get the license, i.e. accounting work in government, business and academia may not be qualified.

Maine CPA Exam Requirements

1. Education Requirements To Sit For The Exam:

  • Bachelor degree or above

2. Additional Requirements To Sit For The Exam:

  • Educational requirements must be met within 120 days following the actual exam date.

3. Additional Requirements To Get CPA License:Education:

  • 150 semester units from an accredited university or educational institution
  • Accounting courses: 15 semester units ( 3 in accounting, 3 in auditing, and ethics)

Work Experience:

  • 2 years of public accounting work experience with at least 400 hours of work experience in audit, review and compilation:
    • at least 400 hours in audit, review and compilation;
    • at least 200 hours in advisory services.
  • The experience has to be supervised by CPA or equivalent (generally means chartered accountants in Canada, CA/CPA in Australia, and possibly also from other countries — please check with ME state board for details)

Ethics Qualification:

  • None required

4. Residency & Age Requirements:

  • US citizenship not required
  • Maine residency not required
  • Minimum age: 18

5. Fees:

  • First-timers: CPA exam fees ($743) + $145 initial application fee
  • Repeaters: exam fees + $65-110 repeat application fees

Can’t Get Qualified In Maine? Don’t give up, as you may well be qualified to register through other states and sit for the same CPA exam. With the recent Substantial Equivalency (CPA reciprocity) rule CPAs from most states can practice across the country.
